My self-summary
I finished my master's degree in financial mathematics at the University of Chicago in June 2008, and moved to New York City in August for a new job and a chance to explore a new city. I enjoy partner dancing, particularly swing dancing. I take good beer, good cocktails, and good coffee seriously. (I roast my own coffee beans—it's the cheapest and best way to go!) I enjoy a wide variety of music, from swinging jazz to alt-country to bluegrass. I'm also an avid fan of women's flat-track roller derby.

I am intent, exploratory, and equanimous
What I’m doing with my life
I'm working in the field of quantitative finance. I enjoy both working with computers and math, and it's a fascinating intersection of the two. I might like to retire into academia, once I feel that I can help students understand not only how to do math and computing, but how they are important to your life—I really love teaching. In the meantime, I settle for teaching a swing dance class at my old high school once a year and the occasional one-off lesson here and there.

As for right now, when I'm not working, I'm busy exploring New York City. Dancing is keeping me pretty busy these days, but I'm trying to keep a few evenings free to meet new people and explore things that don't involve dancing. I finally got myself a sturdy bike, so I'm doing a lot of urban cycling these days too.
I’m really good at
I've been swing dancing for a decade now, so I feel comfortable saying that I'm a good dancer.

I make a good shot of espresso, and can put together a decent breakfast. I'm also not half-bad at navigating a beer list.

I'm getting pretty decent at shaving using a straight razor.
The first things people usually notice about me
That I'm dancing with them.

Or, if it's an off day, a bad case of razor burn from my latest shaving experiment.

The six things I could never do without
I spend a lot of time thinking about
Where I'm heading career-wise, dance-wise, and personal-wise.
On a typical Friday night I am
probably swing dancing.
The most private thing I’m willing to admit
My ideal household pet would be a rat.
