   *** UPDATE: It has been brought to my attention that most of today's cars are operating at the detonation limit, and the philosophy of tuning them is based on avoiding detonation rather than seeking best power or economy well within the detonation envelope (which is the way it used to be, and still is with motorcycles and racing engines). This test presumes that all tuning is being done well within the detonation/misfire envelope, where "standard" combustion trends hold sway. ***
