The Scientific Cultural Theory Test

  1. You may have taken my silly Cultural Theory test before. Now, you'll have a chance to be tested using actual survey items used by social scientists to measure which of the four basic cultural types people fit into.

This test is based on "grid-group Cultural Theory," a theory developed by anthropologist Mary Douglas to explain differences in people's worldviews. In a nutshell, Cultural Theory claims that everyone holds one of four basic worldviews. If you want to learn more about Cultural Theory, check out the book Cultural Theory by Michael Thompson, Richard Ellis, and Aaron Wildavsky.

This is not a scientific personality assessment, although it is based on a scientific instrument used to assess people's worldviews. The test items are taken from Gunnar Grendstad and Susan Sundback's paper "Socio-demographic effects on cultural biases" published in Acta Sociologica, vol. 46, no. 4, 2003, pp. 289-306.
