The Proofreading Test

  1. NOTE: If characters such as é (an e with an acute accent) do not appear properly (instead appearing as, for instance, a white question mark in a black diamond), change the character encoding with which your browser is displaying this page from Unicode to some variant of Western. How finely tuned is your mental error-detection mechanism? Does your subconscience identify an error in a block of text and then wait for your eyes to catch up, or does your next job application depend on a friend's willingness to proofread your résumé? Did you notice that “subconscience” should have been “subconscious” in the preceding sentence? Test your proofreading abilities here. For each question, choose the line of text containing an error. If there are no errors, choose the fourth option. Assume that you are proofreading in a standard form of English, such as Edited American English, as opposed to a distinctly regional dialect.
