The Harbrace Grammar Test

  1. Hi! Welcome to my Harbrace Grammar Test. I'll be using advanced logic and knowledge to determine your true knowledge of proper grammar.
  2. Improper grammar is the bane of my existence... my most pet of all pet peeves, you might say. If more people would just pay attention in college (or even high school), perhaps I wouldn't see so many instances of improper grammar usage in my day-to-day life. It seems that every time I leave my house, I hear or see bone-chilling grammar in some form. I'd wear earplugs and gouge out my eyes if I thought it would do any good.
  3. Now, don't get me wrong... I am not picking on people who speak English as a second language. For those people, I've concluded that getting the point across is what matters. Exquisitely written, grammatically flawless prose is a rare and delicious treat when you encounter it, but (except cases where bad grammar would result in a catastrophic misunderstandings) being picky about it in everyday communication is like insisting on a formal place setting with seven utensils at every meal.
  4. Finally, my most hated grammatical error is the overuse of the word "hopefully." It's an adverb, for Christ's sake! Quit putting it at the beginning of every sentence!
  5. Oh! P.S. People who write things like, "OMFG u r teh kewlest frend evAr!! n i spell thingz rong cos dat is t3h bezt wai 2 flout authoriti!!!111!!1 LOLOLOLOLOLOooollol!!!!!!11111111111 Sk00l iz for lo0zerz"... well, they make me pretty damned homicidal (figuratively speaking, of course).
  6. This test is divided into five categories: Sentence Sense, Sentence Mechanics, Punctuation, and Spelling. Each category section contains five questions. Each correct answer has a point value of twenty. Therefore, if you answer all five questions in a category correctly, you will receive a total score of 100 in that category. I've allowed no handicap points for age or gender.
  7. Okay. Let's test your grammatical skills!
