<p>Here there is no war, no hunger, no disease, no poverty, and no lasting pain.  Each person is placed in his or her perfect job.  Family units consist of a mother, father, and two children - one boy and one girl.  Children are carefully chosen for the parents.  Parents do not choose each other but have the perfect match chosen for them.  Once parents are joined they can make an application for a child.</p>
<p>Each morning families meet to discuss their dreams.  Each evening families eat together and discuss their day and their feelings.  They comfort and support each others as per the rules given by the Community.</p>
<p>The Community is run by Elders.  The Committee of Elders controls everyone and everything, blasting rules and reprimands from loudspeakers located throughout the community, including in every family dwelling. A total of fifty infants are born to Birthmothers every year. Each peer group is identified by its age—for example, Threes, Sevens, Nines—and must follow specific rules about appropriate clothing, haircuts, and activities for that particular peer group. When children become Eights, they begin mandatory volunteering and are closely observed by the Committee of Elders so that the committee can assign a lifelong profession to each child at the Ceremony of Twelve, which takes place every year during the December Ceremony.</p>
<p>People here do not see in color nor do they have memories of the past.  The Giver alone holds the memories and pains of the past.  The Giver also lives alone in private rooms that are lined with shelves full of books.  The rest of the community has given up these things in order to achieve Sameness. </p>
<p>People here live with the illusion of love, but with drugs all emotions are kept in check and are deemed unecessary.</p>
