Donna is a native of New York. Her step-father was a tailor and her mother was a model. She started selling clothes when she was 14 years old.
Donna started as a designer for Anne Klein in 1974. She became the head of their design department in 1989. It was here that she developed and launched the "Seven Easy Pieces" in the Essentials line.
Donna is the founder of DKNY, and even though she currently is not CEO she remains the chairwoman and chief designer of the Donna Karan line.
Donna Karan was quoted to say: “Today, fashion is really about sensuality - how a woman feels on the inside. In the eighties women used suits with exaggerated shoulders and waists to make a strong impression. Women are now more comfortable with themselves and their bodies - they no longer feel the need to hide behind their clothes.”
