Mangudai were usually mounted mongol archers, among other things. While there are a few historians that claim they were expendable troops, the more popular and accurate view is that they were highly trained warriors capable of leading others and holding a high status. The term "Mangudai" means "Belonging to God" and the mongols, like many other cultures believed that they were their god's chosen people. The first Mangudai were actually a specific tribe of mongols called "Minghits" who proved themselves in battle so well that they became a prototype for the knights of the Great Khan.
