The Pirate Mistress
Anne Bonny was one tough broad. She became involved with "Calico Jack," seeing no need to conceal her gender aboard Calico Jack's ship, the William. While piracy had not proven to be the most lucrative business for her and her friends, her reputation preceeded her. One night, after her crew had gotten very drunk off some stolen rum, some government officials apprehended them. The boozed-up crew surrendered without a fight, but she and Mary Read put up quite a fight and it took many men to capture them. The crew was tried, the captain and his shipmates were hung, but Anne and Mary said they were "with child," thus pardoning the execution. Mary died of childbith complications, but Anne escaped and disappeared. Some say it was her father that used bribes to make this possible.
